Wilkinson Sword Pye

SOLD

Code: 11261

A good Victorian Infantry Officers Sword by WIlkinson, dating to 1857.

This example with the original owners initials (W.H.P.) and family crest to the blade with latin motto beneath. The crest appears to be that of the Pye family. I have found limited references to a W.H.Pye attending Addiscome College, the training seminary for officers of the East India Company. There is another slightly later reference to a Lieutenant W.H. Pye serving in the 31st Native Infantry, and to a Captain. W.H. Pye serving with the 16th Native Infantry, so I would feel confident in attributing the sword to him.

This sword will be accompanied by a digital copy of it's Wilkinson Sword Proof Ledger page, which confirms the date, but appears to have been purchased through a retailer.

The sword in generally good condition. Shagreen and twistwire grip complete, the hilt generally good with only minor dings. Small movement between blade and hilt, but easily fixed with a new blade washer.

The blade is generally bright, with light staining towards the tip. Clear makers and proof marks, owners crest, initials, but slight loss to the latin motto "In Cruce C" due to sharpening and light pitting, though the last word is tantalisingly present.

The rest of the blade with the usual floral etching, VR crowned cypher, etc. Blade has been service sharpened, and is now just slightly under its original 32.5 inches.

The steel scabbard has done its job in protecting the blade, but has suffered in the process with areas of pitting, particularly towards the middle section on the left hand side.

A good, early numbered Wilkinson, with research potential.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
