Early 1822/45 69th Regiment Infantry Officers Sword

SOLD

Code: 11427

An interesting example of an early 1822/45 pattern Infantry officers sword.

This example is marked to the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot.

Regulation 1822 pattern hilt with folding guard, shagreen grip with twistwire binding, and stepped pommel with scallopped backpiece. The shagreen and twistwire all complete, and in very good condition. Slight deformation to the guard, now having a squared appearance, but all tight and still handsom. The folding guard fully functtioning.

The 32.5 inch blade shows signs of service sharpening, which would indicate that it was carried with the intention that it might be needed, rather than purely a parade ground sword.

The sword bears the makers markings of Hopkinson, 64 Pall Mall, London. This is mirrored in a cartouche on the top mount of the scabbard. Christopher Thomas Hopkinson, is listed as a Tailor and Army Clothier at this address from 1843.

A further cartouche contains the regimental designation "69th Regt".

The blade showing heavy sharpening, etching now faint, but visible.

Housed in the regulation leather scabbbard with gilded brass mounts, with twing hanging rings. Very good condition, and an excellent fit with no visible shrinkage.

All together a very nice example of a "fighting" sword, which by no means perfect, has been carried and used.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
