1821 Pattern Royal Artillery Officers Sword

A Royal Artillery Officers sword, dating to the First World War.

This example has been service sharpened for field use. Produced by Wilkinson of London, and sold into the trade, likely to a tailor, although there are no markings, and the space at the ricasso where this would normally be found is vacant. This is a good indication that this sword was produced during WW1.

The blade is decorated with foliate etching, the Royal Artillery feathered lighting bolts, the words "Royal Artillery" a field gun, and crowned George V cypher. The blade has even patina and wear for its entire length, but is bright, and the etching legible.

Three bar 1821 pattern hilt, with chequered backpiece. The grip with the majority its original shagreen grip intact, and bound with copper wire binding.

A substantial sword, with a blade length 34 inches, which would indicate a mounted officer, or perhaps Royal Horse Artillery. Signs of service sharpening, and some small edge nicks, but generally very good. No movement between blade and hilt.

No scabbard.

A good entry level collectors sword, or wall hanger with plenty of history.
