George V Royal Artillery Officers Sword By Wilkinson

SOLD

Code: 11518

A recently uncovered George V 1821 Pattern Royal Artillery Officers Sword.

A substantial and completely untouched sword by Wilkinson Sword, Pall Mall, London. Typical three bar hilt with shagreen grip bound in silver twistwire with chequered backstrap.

The 34.5 inch blade in generally good clean condition, with bright floral etching, crowned royal arms, George V cypher, regimental motto "Ubique" field gun, feathered lightning bolts, and "Royal Artillery". The unresearched number dating this sword to May 1917. Unusually for Great War swords of this period, it has been service sharpened, so whoever carried this meant to use it, possibly a mounted officer, which might indicate use in Mesopotamia. There is also a centre of percussion marking to the spine, also unusual for this period.

Grip and hilt solid with no movement. Loss of plating overall, but the whole could be cleaned and polished if desired.

Housed in its leather covered field service scabbard. The bottom drag section of leather is now missing, revealing the wooden core. A good fit, with no splits, and still solid overall.

Overall a good type example, by the best possible maker, which would improve with some care and attention.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
